Kay R. Barrett

Kay R. Barrett is a PhD Candidate in English at Stanford University. She researches literary and media representations of Blackness from the 19th century onwards, focusing on Black feminist interventions in speculative genres. Her work traverses a range of texts—from Pauline Hopkins’ Of One Blood to NK Jemisin’s The Fifth Season—to excavate Black feminist and queer reworkings of genre-specific concepts like monstrosity, utopia, and apocalypse.
